Apple Devonshire Quarrenden

A very old second early dessert apple, dating back to the late 17th century, and very widely grown in Britain, especially in wetter areas. Apple Devonshire Quarrenden produces, small, round, slightly flattened, shiny, deep red apples; the crisp, sweet, white flesh and juice are sometimes stained pink, and have a distinct strawberry flavour. Like all early apples, it does not keep, so eat fresh and juice any excess.  Upright, spreading, moderately vigorous tree, robust and healthy, though it can be susceptible to scab.  Resistant to wind and rain, but don’t plant in a frost pocket, as it blooms early. Self fertile, but crops better with a pollination partner. Also known as 'Blood of the Boyne'

Site: Some shelter
Soil: Any reasonably well drained
Position: Crops best in full sun
Pick: Late August
Keep: Does not keep for more than a week or two
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Self-fertile. Pollination Group 2 (pollinates with Groups 1, 2 and 3)
Uses: Eating apple; juicing
